An Empirical Examination of Barrett's Intuitive Expectation Sets
نویسنده
چکیده
We carried out two category norming studies (repeating MacRae 2005) to empirically examine Barrett’s (2008) notion of intuitive expectation sets as a coherent set of categorical expectations that are strongly correlated with each other. The studies validate some aspects of Barrett’s handcrafted list of intuitive sets and suggest removal as well as addition of some properties. The revised table of intuitive expectation sets is presented below: Solid Objects (a) are hard, rigid, and firm (b) are heavy (c) have a mass (d) are tangible (e) are visible Living Things (a) breathe (b) eat food (c) reproduce (d) move (e) grow (f) vulnerable to injury & death Animals (a) have limbs (b) have blood & heart (c) have a mind (d) have a mind (e) have emotions Mental Beings (a) think (b) are human (c) are animals (d) are intelligent (e) perceive (f) self-aware (g) talk to others (h) understand language.

TOPOLOGICAL SIMILARITY OF L-RELATIONS
$L$-fuzzy rough sets are extensions of the classical rough sets by relaxing theequivalence relations to $L$-relations. The topological structures induced by$L$-fuzzy rough sets have opened up the way for applications of topological factsand methods in granular computing. In this paper, we firstly prove thateach arbitrary $L$-relation can generate an Alexandrov $L$-topology.Based on this fact, w...

Background : Barrett's esophagus is a precancerous lesion leading to esophageal carcinoma in 10% of cases. It is usually remained undetected during endoscopy and most of physicians do not take biopsy from gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) when it seems to be normal. In the present study we have determined the frequency of Barrett's esophagus in a group of Iranian patients referring for endoscopy ...

متن کاملDiscriminative Clustering by Regularized Information Maximization
Is there a principled way to learn a probabilistic discriminative classifier from an unlabeled data set? We present a framework that simultaneously clusters the data and trains a discriminative classifier. We call it Regularized Information Maximization (RIM). RIM optimizes an intuitive information-theoretic objective function which balances class separation, class balance and classifier comple...
متن کاملModeling Category Intuitiveness
We asked 169 participants to spontaneously categorize nine sets of items. A category structure was assumed to be more intuitive if a large number of participants consistently produced the same classification. Our results provide a rich empirical framework for examining models of unsupervised categorization—and illustrate a corresponding profound modeling challenge. We provide a preliminary exam...
